Gatorade was created by four scientists at the University of Florida to help the school's athletes battle the severe Florida heat. The Gator football team struggled with dehydration and heat exhaustion and asked the scientists to help them determine the cause of their problems and develop a solution.
The scientists determined that in the summer heat, athletes had a difficult time hydrating themselves with water alone. After intense research the scientists developed a unique formula of essential electrolytes (salts) and carbohydrates (sugars) to complement the natural blood chemistry in the athlete's body. To this nutritive formula, the development team added flavors to make the formula easier to drink and to encourage reuptake of the fluid, electrolytes, and carbohydrates, the athletes were losing by sweating.
Thus "Gator-aid" was born and was formally named Gatorade Thirst Quencher.
